Every car on the road, every generator humming in a backyard, and every lawnmower buzzing through thick grass shares something in common: a combustion engine doing the heavy lifting. It is one of the most widely used machines in modern history, and yet most people have never taken a close look at what actually goes on inside one.
A petrol engine is a symphony of moving metal. Dozens of parts work together in split-second timing, converting liquid fuel into the force that moves a vehicle forward. Some of these parts spin, some slide, some open and close hundreds of times per minute, and every single one has a specific role that keeps the whole system running.
Understanding what these parts look like, where they sit, and what they do gives you a real advantage. Whether you are trying to have a smarter conversation with your mechanic, troubleshooting an issue under the hood, or simply feeding a curiosity about how things work, knowing your engine parts pays off. Let’s break down the anatomy of a petrol engine, piece by piece.

1. Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is the backbone of the entire engine. It is a large, heavy casting, usually made from cast iron or aluminum alloy, and it houses most of the engine’s critical moving parts. Think of it as the structural foundation that everything else bolts onto or fits into.
Inside the block, you will find the cylinders bored into it, channels for coolant to flow through, and passages for oil to circulate. The block has to be incredibly strong because it withstands enormous pressures and temperatures during combustion. A cracked or warped block is one of the most expensive engine problems you can face, which is why manufacturers spend so much engineering effort getting this single piece right.
2. Cylinder Head
Sitting right on top of the cylinder block, the cylinder head seals the top of the cylinders and creates the combustion chamber where fuel and air ignite. It is fastened to the block with head bolts and sealed with a head gasket, a component that gets a lot of attention because a blown head gasket can lead to overheating, oil contamination, and serious engine damage.
The cylinder head also holds the valves, valve springs, and often the camshaft (in overhead cam designs). Ports cast into the head allow the air-fuel mixture to enter and exhaust gases to exit. Because it deals with extreme heat directly from combustion, the head has its own network of coolant passages to keep temperatures under control.
Beyond its sealing function, the design of the cylinder head heavily influences engine performance. The shape of the combustion chamber, the size of the intake and exhaust ports, and the angle of the valves all affect how efficiently the engine breathes and burns fuel.
3. Cylinder
The cylinder is the smooth-walled tube inside the block where the piston moves up and down. Each cylinder acts as a contained space where the four-stroke cycle, intake, compression, power, and exhaust, plays out over and over again.
Most passenger car engines have four, six, or eight cylinders, though three-cylinder engines have become more popular in smaller vehicles. The interior surface of each cylinder is honed to an extremely fine finish. This smooth bore allows the piston rings to form a tight seal while still letting the piston glide freely. Over time, cylinder walls can wear and develop scoring or glazing, which reduces compression and overall engine efficiency.
4. Piston
The piston is a cylindrical plug that slides up and down inside each cylinder. It is the part that directly receives the force of combustion. When the air-fuel mixture ignites, the expanding gases push the piston downward with tremendous force, and that motion is what ultimately turns the wheels of your car.
Pistons are typically made from aluminum alloy to keep weight down, and they feature grooves around their circumference that hold piston rings. These rings serve two purposes: they seal the combustion chamber so gases don’t leak past the piston, and they scrape excess oil off the cylinder walls to prevent it from burning in the combustion chamber.
Each piston connects to the crankshaft via a connecting rod, sometimes called a con-rod. This linkage is what converts the piston’s straight up-and-down motion into the rotational force the engine needs to drive the transmission.
5. Crankshaft
Located at the bottom of the cylinder block, the crankshaft is a long, heavy shaft with offset sections called “throws” or “journals.” As each piston pushes down during its power stroke, it forces the crankshaft to rotate. In a four-cylinder engine, the crankshaft spins twice for every complete four-stroke cycle.
The crankshaft is precision-machined and balanced to extremely tight tolerances. Even a slight imbalance can cause vibrations that ripple through the entire vehicle. Counterweights built into the crankshaft help smooth out these forces, and the shaft rides on main bearings that are lubricated by pressurized oil from the oil pump.
6. Camshaft
The camshaft is a rod with egg-shaped lobes (called cams) spaced along its length. As the camshaft rotates, these lobes push against the valves, or against pushrods that then actuate the valves, opening and closing them at precisely timed intervals. Getting this timing right is critical because the valves need to open and close in perfect sync with the piston’s position.
In the diagram, the camshaft sits low in the engine block, which is typical of an overhead valve (OHV) design. Other engine layouts place the camshaft up in the cylinder head, referred to as overhead cam (OHC) configurations. Regardless of placement, the camshaft’s job stays the same: controlling valve operation so that fresh air and fuel get in, and spent exhaust gases get out, at exactly the right moments.
7. Timing Chain
The timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, ensuring they rotate in perfect synchronization. Since the camshaft needs to spin at exactly half the speed of the crankshaft in a four-stroke engine, the sprocket on the camshaft is twice the diameter of the one on the crankshaft.
This chain is built to last and typically made from hardened steel links. Some engines use a timing belt, which is a reinforced rubber belt, instead of a chain. Belts are quieter and lighter, but they wear out and need replacement at set intervals. Chains are more durable but can stretch over time, causing the timing to drift. If a timing chain or belt fails completely, the results can be catastrophic, with pistons slamming into open valves and bending or breaking them.
A well-maintained timing chain can often last the life of the engine, but unusual rattling noises at startup or rough idling can signal that the chain has stretched beyond its service limit.
8. Valve
Valves are the gatekeepers of the combustion chamber. Each cylinder typically has at least two valves: an intake valve that opens to let the air-fuel mixture in, and an exhaust valve that opens to let burned gases escape. Many modern engines use four valves per cylinder for better airflow and efficiency.
Each valve is shaped like a mushroom, with a flat head that seats against a machined surface in the cylinder head, forming an airtight seal when closed. A strong spring holds each valve shut, and it takes the force of the camshaft lobe, either directly or through a pushrod and rocker arm, to push the valve open against that spring tension.
9. Pushrod
The pushrod is a slender metal rod that acts as a messenger between the camshaft and the rocker arm in overhead valve engines. When a cam lobe rotates and pushes a lifter upward, the pushrod transfers that upward motion to a rocker arm sitting on top of the cylinder head. The rocker arm then pivots and pushes the valve open.
This design is elegant in its simplicity but does have limitations at very high engine speeds. The weight and length of the pushrod can introduce flex and valve float, which is why high-revving performance engines often favor overhead cam designs that eliminate the pushrod entirely. Still, pushrod engines remain popular in many applications because they allow for a compact, lower-profile engine block and tend to produce strong low-end torque.
10. Carburettor
Perched on top of the engine, the carburettor is responsible for mixing air and fuel in the correct ratio before it enters the combustion chamber. It uses the Venturi effect, where air flowing through a narrow passage speeds up and creates a drop in pressure, to draw fuel from a small reservoir called the float bowl and atomize it into the airstream.
Carburettors were the standard fuel delivery system for decades before electronic fuel injection took over in the 1980s and 1990s. While modern vehicles almost universally use fuel injection for better precision and emissions control, carburettors remain common on older cars, motorcycles, small engines, and certain motorsport applications.
One of the charming (and sometimes frustrating) things about carburettors is that they require occasional adjustment. Changes in altitude, temperature, and humidity can all affect the air-fuel mixture, which means a carburettor that runs perfectly at sea level might run rich or lean in the mountains.
11. Sparking Plug
The sparking plug, often called a spark plug, is a small but mighty component. It threads into the cylinder head with its electrode tip protruding into the combustion chamber. At precisely the right moment, it fires an electrical spark across a tiny gap, igniting the compressed air-fuel mixture and triggering the power stroke.
Each spark plug fires thousands of times per minute. Over time, the electrode wears down, carbon deposits build up, and the gap between the electrodes widens, all of which weaken the spark. A worn or fouled spark plug can cause misfires, rough idling, poor fuel economy, and difficulty starting the engine. Fortunately, spark plugs are one of the cheapest and easiest engine parts to replace, making them a go-to item during routine maintenance.
12. Distributor
The distributor is the traffic controller of the ignition system. It receives high-voltage electricity from the ignition coil and routes it to the correct spark plug at exactly the right time. Inside the distributor, a rotor spins in sync with the engine, passing electrical current to contact points arranged in a circle under the distributor cap. Each contact point connects to a spark plug wire that leads to a specific cylinder.
Timing is everything here. If the spark arrives too early or too late relative to the piston’s position, the engine loses power, runs rough, or can even suffer damage from detonation (commonly called “knocking”). Older distributors used mechanical weights and vacuum diaphragms to adjust ignition timing on the fly, while later models incorporated electronic modules for more precise control.
Like the carburettor, the distributor has largely been replaced in modern engines by coil-on-plug and distributorless ignition systems that use the engine’s computer to manage timing electronically. But for engines that still use one, keeping the distributor cap, rotor, and ignition points in good condition is essential.
13. Coil
The ignition coil is essentially a compact electrical transformer. It takes the relatively low voltage from the battery, typically 12 volts, and steps it up to anywhere between 20,000 and 50,000 volts. That high-voltage jolt is what allows the spark plug to produce a spark strong enough to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
Inside the coil, two sets of wire windings, a primary winding and a secondary winding, are wrapped around an iron core. When current flows through the primary winding and is suddenly interrupted, a magnetic field collapses across the secondary winding and generates a massive voltage spike. That pulse of electricity travels through the distributor and out to the spark plugs.
14. Oil Filter
The oil filter is a small canister, usually mounted on the side of the engine block, that cleans the engine oil as it circulates through the system. Inside the canister, a pleated paper or synthetic filter element traps dirt, metal shavings, carbon particles, and other contaminants that accumulate in the oil over time.
Clean oil is vital for engine longevity. Without proper filtration, abrasive particles would circulate through the engine, wearing down bearings, cylinder walls, and other precision surfaces at an accelerated rate. Most mechanics recommend changing the oil filter every time you change the oil, which for most vehicles means every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers depending on driving conditions and the type of oil used.
Worth noting: a clogged oil filter has a bypass valve built in. If the filter becomes too blocked to allow oil through, the valve opens and lets unfiltered oil flow to the engine. This protects the engine from oil starvation, but it also means dirty oil is circulating freely, which is why staying on top of filter changes matters.
15. Oil Sump
The oil sump, sometimes called the oil pan, sits at the very bottom of the engine. It is a reservoir that collects and holds the engine’s oil supply when the engine is off or when the oil drains back down from the upper engine components by gravity.
Made from stamped steel or cast aluminum, the sump is bolted to the underside of the cylinder block with a gasket between them to prevent leaks. A drain plug at the lowest point of the sump allows mechanics to drain old oil during an oil change. Inside the sump, a pickup tube connected to the oil pump draws oil up and sends it under pressure to all the parts of the engine that need lubrication.
Because it hangs below the engine, the oil sump is vulnerable to damage from road debris and speed bumps, particularly on low-riding vehicles. A punctured sump can drain the engine of oil rapidly, leading to catastrophic engine failure if not caught in time.
16. Alternator
The alternator is the engine’s onboard power plant for electricity. Driven by the fan belt, it converts mechanical energy from the spinning engine into alternating current (AC), which is then rectified into direct current (DC) to charge the battery and power the vehicle’s electrical systems while the engine is running.
Inside the alternator, a rotor spins within a set of stationary wire coils called the stator. The spinning magnetic field of the rotor induces electrical current in the stator windings. A voltage regulator, either built into the alternator or mounted externally, controls the output to keep it at a steady level, typically around 13.5 to 14.5 volts.
17. Fan
The fan is mounted behind or in front of the radiator, and its primary function is to pull (or push) air through the radiator core to help dissipate heat from the engine coolant. In the diagram, the fan sits at the front of the engine and is mechanically driven, meaning it spins whenever the engine is running.
Older engines like the one shown here typically use a belt-driven fan that is always spinning. Many modern vehicles have switched to electric fans that are controlled by a temperature sensor and only kick on when the coolant reaches a certain temperature. Electric fans are more efficient because they don’t sap engine power when cooling is not needed, such as when driving at highway speeds where natural airflow through the grille provides sufficient cooling.
18. Fan Belt
The fan belt, also referred to as a drive belt or serpentine belt in modern setups, is a looped rubber belt that transfers rotational energy from the crankshaft pulley to various engine accessories. In this diagram, it connects the crankshaft to the fan and the alternator, but on many engines it also drives the water pump, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor.
Rubber belts wear out over time. Heat, oil exposure, and constant flexing cause them to crack, fray, and lose tension. A squealing noise from under the hood, especially at startup or when turning the steering wheel, is often a telltale sign of a worn or loose fan belt. If the belt snaps while driving, you lose charging capability from the alternator, coolant circulation from the water pump, and cooling from the fan, all at once. Regular visual inspection and replacing the belt at manufacturer-recommended intervals is a simple way to prevent a breakdown that could leave you stranded.
